FAQ
Q: How often do I have to change filters? A: There isn't really one answer for everyone, however we recommend changing your 5" filters at least annually with MERV 8 filters, not to exceed MERV 11 (going higher can stress equipment). If you have 1" thick filters, we recommend changing them quarterly. It really varies home to home, factors like pets and the type/thickness of the filter may dictate a more frequent change cycle.
Q: Is annual maintenance really necessary? A: While your equipment may appear to be running without issue, there may be problems that exist under the surface. Seasonal maintenance helps ensure that your equipment is healthy and that there isn't an issue that might lead to a critical equipment failure during the heating/cooling season.
Q: What is the difference between a heat pump and a conventional system? A: A conventional system consists of an AC system coupled with a furnace or air handler. A heat pump, as it's name suggests, moves heat in two directions, either out of or into your home. The best way to think of a heat pump is that it's like an AC system that can also run in reverse. Modern heat pumps can pluck heat out of outdoor air, well below 0° F, and warm the indoor air with it. While a heat pump can be used to both cool in the summer and heat in the winter we always suggest having supplemental or emergency heating in the Northeast. That might look like dual-fuel install, where a heat pump is installed along side a gas furnace, or auxiliary electric heating elements added into the air handler.
Q: What does the Mass Save Heat Loan cover? A: This answer is subject to change, always check with Mass Save to see if the program is still available and what the terms and requirements are. Currently the Mass Save Heat Loan will provide a 0% loan up to $50,000 for 7 years (if approved) for a heat pump installation in your home.

Q: Does Prevett Heating and Cooling charge for estimates? A: No! We're always looking for ways to provide our customers with the best quality service, and that often starts with a free estimate!
Q: My system works but does occasionally break down. Should I consider replacing it? A: Not sure if you should repair or replace? Well, consider this: if you're operating an inefficient system that breaks down a lot, it's likely that it's going to break down again. That means more expensive emergency service calls or possible damage to the other components of your heating and cooling system. Also consider the ongoing cost factor. You could save on your energy bills with new high-efficiency equipment. You see, even if your air conditioner is only a few years old, it could be terribly inefficient by today's energy efficiency standards. Installing a new, high-efficiency cooling system can actually pay for itself in energy savings within a relatively short time. Every situation is unique, contact us and we'll be happy to go over your options tailored for your needs and situation with a free estimate.
Q: What options do I have in replacing my furnace? A: There are many options for replacing your furnace that we can explore with you. If the situation calls for a more budget minded or simple approach, we'll be glad to work with you to find an appropriate replacement furnace. If you're looking to modernize and increase efficiency, two stage gas valve equipped furnaces can regulate the flow of gas to limit waste. Variable speed blower equipped furnaces allow for the monitoring of conditions and changes its speed dynamically. This limits blower noise, reduces electrical demands and provides even heat cycles in your home, all while saving you money.
Q: My heating and central air units are more then 20 years old. Should I consider replacing them? A: If the systems are working and have had regular maintenance, that's good news. What needs to be considered though is their efficiency and the availability of parts and refrigerant. Today's high efficiency heating and cooling units can save you hundreds of dollars each year in your heating budget. Systems of that age may have limited parts availability and could contain R-22 refrigerant. R-22 is no longer in production and is expensive to acquire, and the same goes for some replacement parts. This could leave you in a difficult position during the height of heating and cooling seasons. Contact the office and we'll be happy to discuss your options and provide a free estimate!
Q: How can a variable speed fan help me to save on my heating and cooling costs? A: Variable speed fans operate on a simple principle: they are able to spin at different speeds depending on the heating and cooling needs of your home. Usually, they operate at lower speeds, delivering a steady, reliable stream of warm or cool air to your home. This helps control humidity levels, utility costs, and system noise. When conditions become more extreme, the fan speed increases so that the system can meet increased demand, guaranteeing that on even the hottest days or coldest nights, your comfort needs will be met.
Q: I have a wood stove/fireplace that is used in the cold weather. Are there any special points to remember about using them? A: Have your chimney/wood stove/fireplace checked annually by a professional chimney sweep. When not in use, keep the damper closed to reduce heat loss. Also, if your fireplace is open, consider installing glass fireplace doors to further reduce heat loss.
Q: I’d like to install air conditioning but don’t want ductwork. Can I do that? A: Of course, you can. As both an Authorized Daikin and Mitsubushi Dealer we're uniquely qualified to help you select the best ductless solution for your home! Contact us and we'll be happy to schedule a free estimate to go over your options as well as discuss available rebates and tax credits.
Q: Do you have emergency services? A: We maintain an on-call rotation here at Prevett Heating and Cooling. Call the office @ 508-543-1198 to be routed to a technician during the weekend or leave a message outside of business hours. We'll get back to you as soon as possible.
Q: Are there many options for filtering and humidifying air? A: Yes, there are, from the Aprilaire 800 Steam Humidifiers to the high efficiency Air Bear and Panisonic ERV systems, there's a unit to suit your Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) needs. We'd be happy to go through the features of each with you. Contact us for a free estimate
Q: Are there any other tips for keeping down heating/cooling costs? A: Use kitchen and bathroom ventilating fans sparingly. In just one hour these fans can exhaust a houseful of conditioned air. A: Make sure your home is properly insulated. You can install most insulation yourself and the energy savings will more than pay for the materials over time. Contact Mass Save for a free energy audit to find out more (866-527-7283). A: If you have an attached garage, keep your garage door shut. A: Keep your heating and cooling system properly maintained and filters clean. A: Install high efficiency heating and cooling equipment. Contact Prevett Heating and Cooling for a free estimate!
Q: What do I do if my heating or cooling system won’t work? A: Do you have electricity? Neither system will work if there is a power outage. Check for a blown fuse or circuit breaker and reset. If the circuit trips again, call Prevett Heating and Cooling to diagnose and fix the problem. For Heat, check to see if the emergency furnace shutoff switch is in the ON position. (Typically located near the furnace room and has a red faceplate.) Also, check your fuel supply. If oil or propane is low, call your supplier for a refill. If you heat with natural gas be sure the main is open. If you still have no heat, call Prevett Heating and Cooling for a priority service call.
